Planting a New Part of Dronley Wood

This area was clear-felled by the previous owner and never re-planted. After the community bought Dronley Wood in 2019, we began to it replant with species better suited to the soil protecting the woodland edge and restoring its biodiversity value.

What we're doing

01

Coppice with Standards

We planted a coppice with standards, the oldest form of community woodland. Oak forms a valuable long-term over-storey, while the understorey will be coppiced every 20 - 30 years, creating one of the highest biodiversity woodland structures possible.

02

Oak Cluster Planting

Planting began with extensive preparation cutting broom and gorse to give the young trees the best start. We planted the tress in cluseters of oak, with a mix of lime and hazel surrounding them to create a more natural structure and encourage biodiversity.

03

Community Involvement

The planting involved the whole community. Many volunteers joined us, as well as pupils from Auchterhouse Primary School, planting and maintaining their own community woodland.
