Larch
Larch has always been a part of Dronley Wood. Some of the stands are a mixture of Larch and Scots Pine. Larch is a fantastic tree that can produce very durable, high-quality timber if maintained properly.
About Larch
Larch in Scotland
Larch was introduced to Scotland in 1738 by the Duke of Atholl. He brought seedlings from Tyrol (Austria) to Scotland. Some of the original trees are about 275 years old and can be visited near Dunkeld Cathedral. European Larch and Japanese Larch hybridize. Hybrid Larch grows fast and tolerates poor soils. Commercial Forestry started very quickly to prefer Hybrid Larch. Because of that, the Larch at Dronley Wood is almost exclusively Hybrid Larch.
Larch Management
Garry Stewart planted these trees in front of you in the year 2000. The trees have produced good quality timber. Two trees were felled and used for building the shelter at the end of the all-abilities path.
