Veteran Scots Pine

This is the oldest stand at Dronley Community Woodland (planted in 1911).

About this Stand

01

Scots Pine

Scots Pine is the only conifer native to Scotland and has a lifespan of up to 700 years. Veteran trees are essential since they have a very high biodiversity value. This stand grows on a freely drained brown forest soil (Soil Series Darleith). The soil in this area can become relatively dry during spring and summer and is relatively poor in nutrients. Scots Pine is very well adapted to the soil conditions since it can tolerate dry and poor soils.

02

Direct seeding

Unfortunately, we lost a few mature Scots Pine during the storms Arwen, Corrie, and Malik in 2021. We want to regenerate this stand to preserve the genetic provenance of these particular Scots Pine at Dronley Wood. Encouraging natural regeneration of Scots Pine is challenging.

03

Soil preparation

Small-scale, low-impact soil preparation (for example by horse and plough) increases the chances of establishing natural regeneration successfully. Scots Pine can produce up to one million seeds per hectare during a seed year. Successful regeneration can produce up to 50 seedlings per m2 (in year 1).
