Douglas Fir

This stand of Douglas Fir was planted in 1959 and is probably the most valuable stand at Dronley Wood.

About this Stand

01

Douglas Fir

Douglas Fir can grow into huge dimensions. I highly recommend visiting a fantastic Douglas Fir stand at the Hermitage near Dunkeld. That shows you the potential of Continuous Cover Forestry. High-Quality Douglas Fir timber is excellent building timber and very valuable.

02

Surveying

Garry was involved in surveying the entire stand in a lot of detail during the so-called forest mensuration. We have selected and marked the best-quality trees as frame trees. We also pruned the frame trees to increase the timber quality and to highlight the potential and our woodland management approach.

03

Beech

We lost a small number of trees during storm Arwen. We want to plant Beech in the resulting gaps. Introducing Beech will improve diversity, stand structure, age structure, and resilience. Douglas Fir and Beech grow very well in a mixture. Transplanting Beech seedlings from a stand within Dronley Wood will guarantee the best site adaptation.
